PRELIMINARY AGENDA DAY TWO
PANEL TWO
Supporting Intraregional Security Cooperation
November 17, 10.30 AM – 12.00 PM
Overview
Whilst conflicting interests often collide within this organization, the Chinese-led Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) provides a platform for intraregional security cooperation in post-conflict settings. In addition, the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), a Russian-led military alliance is designed to provide military support to its member states. Afghanistan currently holds only observer status in the SCO and CSTO. Both institutions have interests in the Caspian Basin and remain engaged in the region to help build stability and security. After the resurgence of the Taliban, security cooperation among the Caspian states is more important than ever. Panelists will examine the current security environment in the Caspian region and mechanisms that could be employed to foster intraregional security cooperation amidst ongoing turmoil in Afghanistan.
